This year’s Salone del Mobile (April 17-22), Milan, was bigger and better than ever with exhibitions and installations as far as the eye could see, launches, collaborations between the biggest names in design and an extraordinary number of new product releases.
Now that we have all had some time to recover from the Milan hangover, we have narrowed down a selection of our favourite novelties from our brands.
GUBI
Gubi took over the incredible Palazzo Serbellini presenting home, contract and hospitality settings. In their most comprehensive and impressive exhibit to date, Gubi showcased novelties alongside extensions to existing collections and Gubi classics.
The Bat Lounge Chair
The Bat Lounge Chair designed by GamFratesi was a standout favourite. As the name suggests, the arms and back of the lounge chair reference the wingspan of a bat. The Bat Lounge Chair comes in a high and low-back version and is available in a wide range of upholstery and bases.
The C-Chair
Originally designed in 1947 by Marcel Gascoin. Gascoin was a leading French furniture designer in the post-war era. With an elegant shape and strong hand-made construction, the C-Chair became Gascoin’s most famous piece. The C-Chair will be available in French Cane, upholstered and veneer options.
The Revers Collection
Revers is a soft and sinuous interpretation of classic shapes and structures. We love the gently curved shell form, simple lines and details.
The Stay Bed
An exciting addition to the Stay collection and the first bed released by Gubi. Designed by Space Copenhagen, Stay has a sculptural and organic shape that would suit private or commercial use. Available in August 2018.
The Tail Dining Chair
Another beautiful design by GamFratesi for Gubi. The rounded back resembles the spectacular form of a peacock tail. The Tail Dining Chair is available in a low and high-backed version and well suited for public settings such as bars, restaurants, lounges, lobbies and reception areas.
HAY
HAY, Sonos and WeWork collaborated on one of Milan Design Week’s most talk about stands, creating a universe exploring design, sound, living and work environments. Exhibiting at the Palazzo Clerici across 1500m2, visitors could explore different spaces and new designs. HAY launched new furniture, textiles, accessories and lighting from Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, GamFratesi, Stefan Diez and many more. Take a look inside the Palazzo…
The Revolver Stool
Designed by Leon Ransmeier the Revolver Stool is a lower version of the Revolver Bar Stool. With a slim silhouette and 360 degree rotating bearing mechanism in the seat, we predict this will be a best seller!
The Elementaire Chair
Designed by the Bouroullec brothers for everyday life. The Elementaire Chair is made from injection molded solid coloured polypropylene, reinforced by fibreglass and can be used indoors and outdoors.
Eiffel Shelving
The Eiffel Collection was designed on a simple layering principle. Variants include 4, 5 and 6 layer shelving, a coffee table and a side table.
The Silhouette Sofa
For the first time, HAY and GamFratesi come together and the result is not disappointing. The Silhouette Sofa series is characterised by a smooth curve in the sofa’s back. With multiple configurations and variants available, the Silhouette is suitable for both private and public contexts. Availability will be announced in 2018.
The Palissade Cone Table
A new series of tables designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec to complement the existing Palissade series. A durable and resilient design for outdoor terraces, balconies, gardens, cafes and public spaces. Available from July 2018 in two colours: olive and anthracite.
The Palissade Cone Table also looks great paired with the Elementaire Chair!
CARL HANSEN & SONS
During Salone del Mobile 2018 Carl Hansen & Søn invited visitors to experience a thoughtfully curated retreat at the fair where they released designs by Hans J. Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm, Børge Mogensen, Brad Ascalon and Bodil Kjær.
The Society Table
A unique and beautiful writing desk, originally designed by Arne Jacobse in 1952. The Society Table features a leather top with a six drawer unit that can be mounted on either side of the table and optional shelf and integrated lamp.
The Indoor- Outdoor Series
Six decades on from its release in the late 50’s, Carl Hansen & Sons launches Indoor-Outdoor designed by Bodil Kjær. The collection has a strong architectural feel and will be available in 2019.
The CH71 and CH72 Lounge Series
An elegant and comfortable lounge chair and sofa join the Carl Hansen & Sons collection. The CH71 and CH72 were designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1952 but have not been in production since the late 70’s. Available to order from September 2018.
WALTER KNOLL
The Onsa Chair
Like a flower stretching towards the sun, if you lean back in the chair, the bucket seat opens like a chalice. The Onsa Chair was designed by Mauro Lipparini with comfort, relaxation and harmony in mind.
The Bundle Sofa
Designed by EOOS, the Bundle Sofa is a well-designed piece of upholstered furniture and a reminder of why we love Walter Knoll, in case you need reminding!
Ishino Coffee Tables
A striking design by Dai Sugasawa, drawing upon the original beauty of naturally polished pebbles and the lightness of stone. The table top is constructed of a lightweight concrete finished in copper, bronze or brass.
FREDERICIA
After a hugely successful Stockholm Furniture Fair in February, Fredericia showed that there was more to give showcasing their designs. In their elegant, refined and effortless way, Fredericia presented new members of the Spine collection alongside a sculptural table collection named Tableau, designed by Space Copenhagen. Fredericia also unveiled the return of an icon – the Spanish Dining Chair. Originally designed by Børge Mogensen in 1964, the iconic chair is back in a revisited version. The Spanish Dining Chair will be available from September 2018.
TREKU
Spanish brand Treku launched the Bisell Chair, designed by Manel Molina Studio. We love Treku’s effortless ability to combine natural wood finishes with earthy coloured lacquers and natural materials. More details on the Bisell Chair will be announced shortly.
ONDARETTA
Ondaretta has expanded it’s product catalog with the addition of the DRY Collection. The collection consists of a modular shelving solution, a table available in different heights, widths and lengths and a bench.
