designFARM are pleased to announce the launch of the Kubrick series by local designer Jack Flanagan.
In keeping with their passion and support for local Australian design, designFARM are delighted to bring the Kubrick series, by Perth Hills based emerging designer, Jack Flanagan, to the W.A. market. Flanagan graduated from Industrial Design at Perth’s Central Institute of Technology in 2012 and has since gained a solid reputation within the Australian design industry as well as International attention. Flanagan has been hand-picked by the curator of the London Design Festival, Suzanne Trocmé, to take part for three years running. Amongst undertaking numerous design endeavours, Flanagan also teaches at Perth’s Central Institute of Technology. Poised for big things, Jack Flanagan is a name to watch.
The Kubrick series forms an exploration and reconsideration of 3D forms through the manipulation of 2D materials. Upon close inspection, a unique method of joinery makes it apparent that Kubrick has been considered meticulously in every which way. Whilst the foundations of the stool are 2D in nature and with a 3-legged base, the strength and solidity of Kubrick cannot be faulted. As an Australian designed and manufactured collection the Kubrick series offers a great deal of flexibility and customisation within its design. The stool is available in three sizes (450 H, 650 H and 750 H) as well as a stackable feature. The Kubrick table offers customisation with the attractive option to specify your own size. Constructed from Birch Plywood, Kubrick can be washed in a fresh, muted palette of 5 coloured finishes including blue, green, grey, white and black. The hand-finished application of the coloured finish allows for slight visibility of the timber grain, giving each piece an individual character. Kubrick is intended to become an extension of the family, inbuilt durability and a timeless aesthetic allows the piece to grow with you. Just like a Kubrick film, the Kubrick stool will remain a much loved classic for years to come.
JACK FLANAGAN
Jack Flanagan grew up in the Perth Hills and after studying engineering for a year, transferred to Industrial Design at the Central Institute of Technology in Perth. He had found his ‘calling’ and graduated in 2012. Since graduating, his work has been consistently selected by curators for exhibitions within Australia and has been selected to exhibit at the London Design Festival on three separate occasions. Flanagan currently works from his studio in the Perth Hills where he develops all of his work, whilst occasionally teaching Industrial Design at the Central Institute of Technology.
Informing Flanagan’s work is the exploration toward concepts of attachment, permanence and the relationships that families and individuals forge with treasured objects, which become the recorder and keeper of shared stories. Flanagan has gained a wealth of hands-on experience having designed, prototyped and developed hospital equipment products for production, acoustic modules for theatres and materials handling equipment. Embracing ancient and traditional techniques, Flanagan favours materials like bronze and aluminium sand casting, turned metals and timbers. Whilst employing traditional methods, Flanagan is akin to working with the latest manufacturing technology on an industrial scale. An experimentation with unique coloured finishes and timber stains has given Flanagan’s work a distinctive aesthetic.
